2017 Mornington Peninsula 'Red Hill' Pinot Noir


2017 was a cooler vintage than 2016. Hence we decided this vineyards wine was better represented with less bunches. This wine is 50% wholebunch, and blended with a parcel that was destemmed. The MV6 and 777 clones were used in equal parts.

Whole bunches are placed into fermenters carefully with some SO2 and CO2, then are sealed up airtight and allowed to ferment naturally. Only minimal foot stomping is used to release sugars to keep ferment active.

The destemmed portion had the stalks removed and was then aloud to post macerate for several days before it fermented naturally. Plunged occasionally.

The ferments were pressed after two weeks and transferred to barrels to finish off the fermentation. Bottled in April 2018. Unfined and unfiltered. 25% new French Oak.

Savoury detail is good in this wine, char and earth, brambles and sour cherry, pepper and clove. Lots of character and detail in drinking. Fine swish of tannins a feature, as is the amaro-like tang to acidity. Like this. Kinda funky, kinda neat, very drinkable. 93. Mike Bennie. Winefront
